The hand grip can be gently tapped off to shorten then tapped back on again it is held by a tapered hole.
When closing your curtains pull the rod at an angle away from the curtain in the direction you want the curtain to go.
When opening the rod should be at an angle in front of the curtain.
Avoid using the rod straight up putting pressure on the rod causing it to bend or break.
